Create the Perfect Last Minute Table Setting

Make a good impression when last-minute guests arrive with a beautiful table setting. Creating a visually-pleasing table setting involves the right combination of color, shapes and sizes in your dinnerware, serving pieces, linens and decorative items. Keep your favorite seasonal pieces clean and ready to go to make setting a company-worthy table easy anytime.
Start your table setting with a centerpiece. Seasonal flowers or a bowl of fresh fruit work well. If those are not available, get creative. Select a favorite bowl, and fill it with an assortment of pretty rocks, shells or holiday ornaments. Make sure the centerpiece is low enough to allow for easy conversation.
Use your centerpiece to pick a theme. The theme unifies your table setting and makes it easier to complete. Easy themes includes colors, holidays and seasons. Gather items to support your choice, and start layering them on your table. It is not essential that every item support your theme. Neutral dinnerware or linens pair well with theme-oriented serving pieces, such as teapots, platters and tureens.
Pay attention to the tone of your table setting. Do not go overboard with too much clutter. For a natural tone, keep decorative items to a minimum. Lay a few interesting pieces as focal points, and tone down everything else. For a more decorative tone, up the visual interest but still focus on using pieces that work together. Polka dots, stripes and nature prints might all go with your green theme, but they end up looking cluttered when clustered together on the table.
For a beautiful last-minute table setting, start with a special centerpiece. Choose a theme and add elements from your dinnerware, serving ware and linen collections to support the theme. Choose neutrals for some items for an even tone, and avoid clutter by sticking to a few focal points in your scheme. Enjoy the complements from your guests and family when they come to the table and see your beautiful display.
