Traveling to San Francisco in 1979, I discovered a bit of Italy. I can still hear the steam hissing from huge copper espresso machine and smell fragrant espresso in the air. So intense, so European! In the Napa Valley, rows of plush vineyards blanketed the landscape. It was here I learned to use my palette, testing the taste of everything, as if “tasting” for the very first time.
