Flowers may seem to most like little more than lovely plants. However, their colorful buds can communicate volumes when interpreted through the tradition of Victorian English flower language. Some will be instantly familiar: roses for romance and apples for temptation. Shakespeare's use of ""rosemaries for remembrance"" in Hamlet shows that the tradition dates back to centuries before Queen Victoria. Further learning may reveal some surprising and highly specific associations. Rue and tamarisk respectively stand for disdain and crime, so be careful about including either in a bouquet!

The clematis flower has its own meaning: art. This association may derive from its ""clever"" ability to climb walls like a vine, which made it popular in Japanese and Chinese gardens long before reaching Europe.
